Pets A recent news story about a dog that stole some TicTacs"".from his master’s purse got me thinking about the various foods that dogs should not eat. The story was about a particular ingredient found in many sugar free candies, and also in Tums"". It got me thinking and trying to recall all of the various dangerous foods for dogs. I was glad to learn this, because there are many times I considered giving big French Sheep Dog a breath mint just to … ah … clear the air, shall we say. Somehow I think she would play the snob and stick her nose up in the air if I did offer them. Thankfully, I never did. The story would have struck me funny — a dog sneaking a breath mint, until I learned the dog nearly died. It appears that the "natural" substance xylitol, which is an acceptable sugar substitute for human consumption, is dangerous to dogs. It affects their insulin levels and attacks the liver. If you ever consider giving your dog something to help his or her breath, make sure you don’t give them a sugar free breath mint. They are among the dangerous foods for dogs to consume. If your dog has eaten anything that includes xylitol, you should call the NAPCC (the National Animal Poison Control Center). Their phone number is 888-4435. Are you aware of the many dangerous foods for dogs? There are a few familiar foods on the list. Some you may not know about. Foods Dogs Should Not Eat: * Alcoholic Beverages * Avocado * Coffee/chocolate * Macadamia nuts * Raisins and Grapes * Garlic & Onions * Salt * Yeast dough * Moldy and spoiled food (again — goes without saying) * Raw salmon A really good discussion of this very subject was done on Martha Stewart’s television show. She discussed the various dangerous foods for dogs with Dr. Marty Goldstein, a well known veterinarian. We put a video clip of that discussion on our dog blog, and you’ll find it very informative.
